Android - Then and Now


Android the best selling mobile operating system was created by Android.inc initially and then Google acquired it in 2005. First Google android phone was announced in 2008 .

Android being so popular among people and making their lives sweet, so the versions of android are named after popular deserts. Android versions from 2008 till now are :

ALPHA (Android 1.0)

                            

First version of android was alpha released on September 23, 2008. its logo was green.But initially android did not gain much popularity. 


BETA(Android 1.1) 



Second release from android was of beta version 1.1 on February 9, 2009.It was able to save attachments in message and had long in call screen when using the speakerphone, plus ablility to show or hide dialpad.  

CUPCAKE (Android 1.5)


Android 1.5 i.e, cupcake came out to be the major release from android. It was released on April 30, 2009. This version of android was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29. It had  third-party virtual keyboards with text prediction, auto-rotation option and supported widgets. it was able to upload videos and photos.
    

DONUT(Android 1.6)


Android 1.6 i.e, donut was released on September 15, 2009. It was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29. it had gallery, camera with faster access, ability for users to select multiple photos for deletion, speed improvements in searching and camera applications, ability to include searches in result.


ECLAIR (Android 2.0/2.1)


Android version 2.0/2.1 was released on oct.25,2009. It had Bluetooth 2.1 support, ability to tap a Contacts photo and select to call, SMS, or email the person ,ability to search all saved SMS and MMS messages, with delete oldest messages in a conversation automatically deleted when a defined limit is reached, numerous new camera features, including flash support, digital zoom and much more.

FROYO(Android 2.2)



Android version 2.2 i.e, froyo was released on May 20, 2010. It had Speed, memory, and performance optimizations, USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality and Improved application launcher with shortcuts to Phone and Browser applications.It supported for numeric and alphanumeric passwords, adobe flash and also file upload fields in the Browser application.


GINGERBREAD (Android 2.3)



Android version 2.3 i.e, gingerbread was released on December 6, 2010. It had more senses, audio, graphical, and input enhancements for game developers, improved power management with a more active role in managing applications that are keeping the device awake for too long, new download manager, giving users easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email, or another application, support for multiple cameras on the device, including a front-facing camera, support for voice or video chat.



HONEY COMB(Android 3.0)


Android version 3.0 i.e, Honeycomb was released on February 22,2011. It was having features like connectivity for USB accessories ,expanded Recent Applications list, resizable Home screen widgets, support for external keyboards and pointing devices, support for joysticks and game pads, high-performance Wi-Fi lock, maintaining high-performance Wi-Fi connections when device screen is off, improved hardware support,  hardware acceleration, support for multi-core processor , ability to encrypt all user data.


ICE CREAM SANDWICH(Android 4.0)


Android version 4.0 i.e, ice cream sandwich was released on October 9, 2011. I was having features like pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar, integrated screenshot capture, improved error correction on the keyboard, ability to access applications directly from lock screen, improved copy and paste functionality, better voice integration and continuous, real-time speech to text dictation, face Unlock, a feature that allows users to unlock handsets using facial recognition software, automatic syncing of browser with users' Chrome bookmarks. 

JELLYBEAN(Android 4.1)


Android version 4.1 i.e, jellybean was released on July 9, 2012. It had dial pad auto-complete in the Phone application, volume for incoming calls (ringtone) and notification alerts is no longer adjustable separately, bluetooth low energy support, group messaging,multiple user account, lock screen improvement Wi-Fi location still runs even when Wi-Fi is turned off, added support for five more languages, clock in the status bar disappears if clock is selected as lockscreen widget, native emoji support.


KITKAT(Android 4.4)


Android version 4.4 i.e, kitkat was released on September 3,2013. It had settings application now makes it possible to select default text messaging and home (launcher) application, audio tunneling, audio monitoring and loudness enhancer built-in screen recording feature ,new framework for UI transitions, sensor batching, step detector, verified boot, restriction for applications when accessing external storage, disabled access to battery statistics by third-party applications, settings application no longer uses a multi-pane layout on devices with larger screens, Wi-Fi and mobile data activity indicators are moved to quick setting.


LOLLIPOP (Android 5.5)



Android version 5.5 i.e, lollipop was released on November 12, 2014. It had Official support for multiple SIM cards, improvements and bug-fixes to the Overview screen, ability to join Wi-Fi networks and control paired Bluetooth devices from quick settings, support for 64-bitt CPU, support for print previews, refreshed lock screen, no longer supporting widgets, refreshed notification tray and quick settings pull-down ,project volta, for battery life improvements, searches can be performed within the system settings for quicker access to particular settings, lock screen provides shortcuts to application and notification settings, guest logins and multiple user accounts are available on more devices, such as phones., audio input and output through USB devices.


MARSHMALLOW (Android 6.0)



Android version 2.2 i.e, Marshmallow was released on May 28, 2015. It has Google "Now on Tap" feature, app Standby feature, renamed "Priority" mode to "Do Not Disturb" mode,Automatic full data backup and restore for app, 4K display mode for app, adoptable External storage to behave like Internal Storage, app permissions now granted individually at run-time, not all-or-nothing at install time.


NOUGAT (Android 7.0)



  Android version 7.0 i.e, nougat was released on  August 22, 2016, with Nexus devices being the first to receive the update. It is the most latest version of android till date. t has ability to screen zoom, ability to switch apps by double tapping in overview button, added Emergency information part,added the "Clear All" button in Overview screen, new data saver mode, Multi-window support.
